Come to Bed
Where was the fear?
That's what Niki couldn't figure out as she lay in bed awake. For the first time in so many months, DL was under her roof. He was just outside the bedroom, on the couch, and nobody was watching him. He could make off with Micah or slit her throat at any moment. He was a dangerous killer. And yet, where was the fear?
She'd been dreading this moment for so long, and yet the moment she heard his voice, her fear had dissipated. She had forgotten in all these months of trepidation how much the sound of his voice calmed her. How whole she felt in his presence. It was one of the reasons she'd married him in the first place--the sense that with him around, things were okay.
And when she threatened to scream, he hadn't covered her mouth or told her to go ahead and try it. He'd said, "I hope you won't scream." Giving her the power to choose. Respecting her right to answer. In that moment she knew he wasn't here to threaten her or harm her.
Niki remembered how she had agonized over whether to marry him. She knew she was attractive. She probably could have held out for someone more financially solvent. Sure. But would any man fill the void in her heart the way he had, with his velvet voice and steely eyes?
How had she managed to convince herself she hated him? This was a man she had fallen in love with, after all.
This was a man she still loved.
And he would leave in the morning...
That brought her to her feet.
The last time she had slept with a man, Niki recalled with regret, she hadn't remembered a moment of it. So as she moved into the doorway, saw his silhouette draped over the couch like a luxurious blanket, she resolved that she wouldn't let that happen tonight. Tonight she was determined to remember every last detail.
"Come to bed," she said.
