Well, I decide on a mantra by making what I need to focus on into a simple statement. "Do not kill your sister." "Stop eating this cake. Right now." "You are going to hell if you keep writing this."

If you're worried about characterization, have someone look it over for you before you post it, but please don't just not try because you think you might do it wrong! That's one of MY mantras: The saying "you cannot fail if you do not try" is not a justification for not trying.
