"I think he's going to miss you," Jensen comments as Icarus noses at Jared's knee and snuffles.
"A dog missing his vet," Jared says. "Well, there's a first time for everything."
Jensen almost says He's not the only one, but he bites it back and opens up the car door to let Icarus jump in. "Hey, uh, you wouldn't want to take a ride over with us? Just for, you know, a smoother transition?"
"I c--" Jared starts to say.
"It's five minutes." Jensen flushes.
Jared looks back at the clinic, then over at Jensen. His eyes hold there for an endless moment. "Yeah, OK... five minutes I can do."
They make it to the house and Icarus limps weakly to his doggy bed and settles down, exhausted from the five minutes of travel. Jensen shrugs and grins at Jared. "I guess I brought you out here for nothing," he says, regret in his voice. "I'll drive you back?"
"Uh, yeah." Jared keeps looking down at the carpet, then up at Jensen again. "I should get back."
From his bed, Icarus growls at them.
"He doesn't think so," Jared quips.
"Well, uh, you're welcome to stay," Jensen says.
Icarus makes a squeaking noise and wags his tail.
"I guess I know which side he's on," Jared says. Jensen thinks he sees him trembling. "But I have to--"
A growl from the corner and Jared just laughs. "He's a stubborn one."
Jensen shrugs. "So sit down for ten minutes," he says. "I'll put on coffee."
He doesn't make it to the coffee maker. The minute he rounds the corner to the kitchen, Jared pulls on his arm, turning him around. There's a flash of eye contact and then Jensen's sucked into a kiss that's warm and wild and heart-pounding -- and then gone.
"Sorry," Jared says, and his voice is breathy, urgent. "But it's been kind of driving me crazy how badly I've wanted to do that all week, and you're just so gorgeous and I haven't been able to think of anything else--"
Jensen grabs him by the shoulders and pulls him in again. Icarus serenades them with little howls from the other room. Jared's palms rise up to cup Jensen's face, and at once Jensen feels strangely safe, sheltered within the knowledge of those two experienced hands. All the compassion and the affection that he's seen in Jared's face toward the animals in his care, it's all pouring into him now, and it's a feeling like no other.
He stumbles backward. "I should take you back now," he says, wiping his lips.
"I'm sorry," Jared begins.
"There'll be coffee ready when you come back after work," Jensen says.
Jared grins. Icarus yips. Jensen reaches for his hand as they head back out the door.
