Prompt #17: Miracles
Miracles are things that happen only once in a lifetime. That's what Matt's always believed.
And it was his firm belief that Molly was his once-in-a-lifetime miracle. After all, who would have thought that the girl who awakened him, whose voice was the first he heard in his head, would be here, a continent away, after months of trying and failing and striving to make sense of his life?
And those four bullets should have been the punctuation to his death sentence, but he was alive. He was recovering. And she was here with him. She called him her hero. Wasn't that miracle enough?
But one morning he woke up and there was another man in his bed. Not another man. The other man. The man with whom he shared her heart. The man he'd grown to hate, to resent. The man he'd sparred with over tea late at night when her nightmares kept her up. A man whose bright eyes saw more and knew more than he could ever imagine. Who understood him down to his skin, beyond his cells. Every atom Matt was, Mohinder understood and knew. And Matt had fallen in love with him, hopelessly and unrequitedly.
It was the sort of love that you didn't even dream of having. Almost bordering on worship. The sort of love that you had in high school, when you encountered a face so perfect that for the first time in your life your heart swells beyond your family and your favorite toys and your best friend. And you knew that there was beauty in this world so great that you would never be able to touch it.
Matt was well out of high school. He didn't think for an instant that it was even a possibility. He'd been there one too many times. He wasn't expecting miracles. He already had Molly. And miracles only happened once in a lifetime.
Except for now sleepy eyes were opening. And long fingers were reaching out to touch his face.
"Did last night really happen?" were the first words out of Mohinder's mouth.
And the first words in his head were, Please don't let this be a dream.
So maybe miracles happened twice in a lifetime. Who knew?
