Eleven Reasons We Were Reborn
a Please Save My Earth fanfic set by Jennifer Wand

I. For a Dinosaur’s Eye

"The moon and Tokyo Tower look even more like a painting than I thought they would. The tower looks like a dinosaur. A lonely dinosaur, and the moon is his friend. It's a precious picture, like touching a fairy tale." --Haruhiko

In a rare dream that was not a Moon Dream, Haruhiko was atop Tokyo Tower.

He wasn’t sure how he’d gotten there – his heart was not pounding as it would be if he had “jumped” – but he was certainly floating in midair, looking out at the cinema district and the grounds of the imperial palace, the neon lights of Roppongi and Shibuya blaring like great eyes further out to the horizon.

The blinking light that marked the tower’s summit was eclipsing his vision every few seconds with a bright white glare. This being a dream, the light didn’t hurt Haru’s eyes, even when he turned to face it head-on. He’d looked up at that light from his bedroom window so many times during his convalescence. It seemed to him the great dinosaur of the Tower was turning from its contemplation of the moon to wink at him.

I know the loneliness you feel, it said.

I understand your pain and your regrets. I, too, was desperate not to become extinct, and I made a choice that I should not have made.

Now Haru was close enough to touch the great creature, when as he reached out it was as if he could feel the scaly skin, moist with tears, of a forgotten beast who had once stood in this very spot. “What is it?” he whispered. “What did you do?”

Don’t make me tell you, the dinosaur whispered into his mind. Just tell me I’m forgiven.

The air felt cold against Haru’s bare heels as a breeze rushed around his ankles. Instinctively, he leaned forward as if to embrace the invisible giant. “I forgive you,” he said. “I forgive you.”

Thank you, whispered the beast. Now I can rest. And it disappeared, leaving only the metallic skeleton of Tokyo Tower behind.

Where Haru’s hands had been touching the skin of a ghost, there was now air. With a lurch of panic, he began to fall. “What will I do?” he thought. “If someone doesn’t forgive me, I’ll have to jump—“

He awoke with a start.

When his heart calmed down, when he could no longer feel the turning of the world around him, Haru looked up at his bedroom ceiling and said aloud the thoughts he’d had in the dream. “If someone doesn’t forgive me…”

But he’d been able to forgive that dinosaur.

Did that mean that someone would be able to forgive him for what he’d done?

He looked out the window. The light in Tokyo Tower, the dinosaur’s eyes, winked at him gently. Haru thought he heard a final whisper.

Isn’t that why you’re here?
