AND you've got a side story on the way. you lucky lucky duck :DDDD

Oh! You will love this!

1) Most boring bit first: My headcanon is that Dean is actually part of a bloodline that's not just a vessel bloodline but one of mutability. Meaning, not everyone can be a vessel, a vampire, Death and a god -- he has some really remarkable DNA going on, and he is basically The Empty Vessel that the whole universe is trying to bend to its will.

2) Originally, the story had the title "Potential," and I was going to go really deep into the mythology behind how it was that Gabriel could be an archetype that was alive although him as a person was technically dead. I actually kept the original opening to the fic, which was very Wheel of Time-y --

At the beginning of the world, there were no gods or humans. There were no planets or stars. There was not even space. There was the absence of anything, a hole where the universe ought to be. But from holes, from the absence of things, springs potential. And potential is never content untapped.

So Potential bred.

Potential's first children were Matter, Thought, and Purpose. Matter gave birth to Things. Places, and Creatures. They became planets and stars, plants and animals, people and tools, and everything that can be held or located or drawn on paper or seen through lenses. Everything with weight, everything that has existence.
Thought gave birth to Life and Death, to Time and Energy. Thought's children turned Matter's children from dumb constructs to objects with attributes, gave them names and locations in the universe. Crafted their beginnings and ends, tied them to eras and geological ages. Created order and finality.
And Purpose, the freewheeling baby of the universe's origins, created Destiny and Will. Stories. Priorities. Importance. And Purpose also created Victory and Defeat, Fulfillment and Despondence, and as a last thought, Irony and Humor. Purpose's children gave meaning to the things that Matter had spawned and the thoughts that drove them. And Purpose divided up gods and monsters, angels and demons and humans, pitted them against each other, drove them to alliances, and left some as outliers, as hybrids, there to put the lie to the rest of them.

The Trickster was one such outlier. Both and angel and a monster, driven to finally take the side of humans, he laughed at destiny and provided the key to thwarting Destiny.

And when he died, there was a hole left in the world.

But from holes, from the absence of things, springs potential. And potential will always breed.
